With seven kilometres of beautifully kept white sandy beaches and one of the longest promenades on the Costa del Sol Fuengirola is a paradise for sun worshippers and water sports enthusiasts.
All the local beaches have been awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanliness in recent years and they are well served with bars and designated areas for volleyball, windsurfing, jet ski-ing and other watersports.
The marina is the main focus for sporting activity. The Fuengirola Diving Centre and Club Nautico provide facilities for a full range of water sports including sailing, windsurfing, jet and water ski-ing, scuba diving and fishing.
Local fishing vessels share the marina with luxury yachts. There are plentiful bars and restaurants here so if you're not the sporty type it's a great place to just sit and people watch.
You can charter a boat for the day from the marina office or enjoy an evening cruise on board the Dawn Approach - a lovely old sailing vessel based at the end of the main pontoon.
The Paseo Maritimo (seafront promenade) flanks all Fuengirola's beaches and is equally well served with bars, restaurants and shops.
To get away from the hordes of summer visitors try the Los Boliches beach, favoured more by the local Spaniards than foreign tourists.
If you're visiting in July you can enjoy one of Fuengirola's biggest fiestas - the feast of the Virgen del Carmen on July 16th when an effigy of the virgin is taken out to sea from the local church, followed by a colourful flotilla of local fishing vessels and other boats.
Because of Fuengirola's history as a sea trading and fishing town, you'll find a wealth of first class seafood restaurants along the beachfront with local dishes freshly prepared using the catch of the day.
All the beaches along this section of the Costa del Sol are peppered with "chiringuitos" - the beach bars which serve delicious food and local snacks such as the char-grilled sardine kebabs and spicy "pil-pil" prawns.
And for those who prefer a taste of home there are plenty of burger bars, pizza joints and bangers-and-mash type eateries all along the seafront.
For a great family day out visit the Mijas Aquatic Park on the Fuengirola ring road. Here you and the kids can enjoy a wonderful water world of kamikaze slides, wild river rides, body ski-ing and gentler water-based fun and activities. This area's clement climate allows the park to operate daily from the end of April to the end of September. Look out for special entrance offers in the local English newspapers The Entertainer and Sur.
For a glimpse into the lives of the royals, the rich and the famous, pop along the coast to swanky Puerto Banus on the west side of Marbella. Marvel at the multi-million pound yachts as you drool enviously over your pricey but deliciously refreshing Haagen Das ice-cream on the quayside!
If you're an expert windsurfer then get yourself down to Tarifa at the southernmost tip of Spain - the awesome winds that lash this city year-round have earned Tarifa a reputation as the windsurfers' paradise of the Mediterranean.
From nearby Algeciras you can take the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar to North Africa and spend many a happy hour haggling in the manic markets of Tangier's Kasbah.
