The town of Fuengirola is located in the Spanish region of Andalucia on the Costa del Sol. Since the advent of the package tourist industry in the 1960s this former fishing village has been transformed into a modern high-rise resort favoured by Spanish nationals and foreign alike.
Visitors flock here to enjoy five miles of glorious sandy beaches served by all the essential requirements of the modern tourist - bars, restaurants, entertainment, high rise hotels and self-catering apartments.
Fuengirola is a self-contained resort where you'll find all your holiday needs met within easy reach of your accommodation. There are excellent shops and supermarkets with local handicrafts and fresh regional produce as well as the "must haves" imported from countries like England and Germany to satisfy the demands of foreign holidaymakers (everything from peanut butter and marmite to jars of sauerkraut!).
The town is just 20 minutes west of Malaga's international airport and good local train and bus services provide easy access to neighbouring resorts along this stretch of the Costa del Sol.
The beachfront is flanked by one of the longest promenades on the Costa - it was recently widened and landscaped by the local authorities to provide the perfect venue for the traditional Spanish "paseo", the popular past time of promenading with no particular destination in mind!
Next to the main resort area you'll find Los Boliches where the winding narrow streets and traditional whitewashed houses are a reminder of the way life used to be in Fuengirola.
It's the locals of Los Boliches who organise one of Fuengirola's biggest fiestas of the year - the feast of the Virgen del Carmen on July 16th when an effigy of the virgin is taken out to sea followed by a flotilla of boats.
Because of its history as a sea trading and fishing town, you'll find a wealth of first class seafood restaurants with local dishes freshly prepared using the catch of the day.
Local specialties include sardine kebabs, rice with shellfish and sea bass baked in salt. There's a good selection of traditional Spanish tapas bars where you can try delicious local snacks such as spicy prawns in garlic, mussels, Spanish "chorizo" sausage and regional cheeses.
And because of the huge numbers of foreign tourists here you'll also find plenty of burger bars, pizza joints, English fish and chips and Guinness on tap.
There's non-stop entertainment for kids and adults alike. Fuengirola has the Costa del Sol's only zoo and there's the Tivoli Amusement Park at nearby Arroyo de la Miel. A big water park on the Fuengirola by-pass at Mijas Costa is a great family day and down at the seafront there's a good range of beach and water sports.
There's live music and entertainment in the bars and the place is saturated with pubs and clubs. In the summer months the nightlife keeps going from dusk till dawn.
