Denia has a good range of holiday accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. There's a far bigger selection of hotels here than in the neighbouring resort of Javea which relies on the holiday villa market. But Denia has carefully avoided becoming a "hotel city" like Benidorm. Planning controls have blocked skyscraper development but you'll find a good selection of quality hotels, self-catering apartments and holiday villas with private pools.
Hotels here range from the luxurious and elegant to the cheap and cheerful. The choice is yours.
Welcome to the Buena Vista
A shining example of "top of the range" is the sumptuous Buena Vista. It's set in 15,730 square metres of beautiful gardens and land overlooking the beach of Les Marines and the Montgo Mountain Natural Park. The main building dates from the late 19th century and is surrounded by a centenary garden of orange, palm, willow, cypress and oak trees. It oozes elegance and sophistication.
The Buena Vista is classed as a "rusticae" hotel - this is a name to look out for if you're seeking hotel accommodation with a difference. The rusticae hotels tend to be small, charming, in natural surroundings and with a strong emphasis on personal service and attention to detail. They're often buildings of historic interest.
There are plentiful three and two star hotels to choose from, like the Hotel Racona. These usually offer a good range of facilities including air conditioning (a must in July and August), satellite TV, swimming pool, tennis and wheelchair access.
Affordable Accommodation - Hostals
If you're looking for something cheaper, try one of the many "hostals" which are usually clean, comfortable and excellent value for money. The vast majority have en-suite bathrooms these days but not the full range of facilities found in 3-star hotels.
Try the Hostal Loreto in the centre of the old city, close to many good restaurants and shops. It's rumoured that there's a secret tunnel to the castle on the hill top behind the hostal.
The hostal was formerly a nunnery and was built by the Marquis del Campo about 450 years ago. It's just 600 metres from the beach and has 42 recently renovated rooms, mostly en-suite.
The coastal road leading out from Denia towards the north is awash with small hotels and large holiday apartment blocks. The area of Las Marinas is completely geared to holidaymakers in the summer - supermarkets, bars and restaurants cater to their every whim. Renting a self catering apartment here is a popular holiday choice because everything you need is on the spot and you're right on the beach.
On the south side of the town the lower slopes of the imposing Montgo mountain are peppered with villa developments - both holiday and residential.
You'll find plenty of companies specialising in villa rentals here. For a large group this can work out cheaper than a hotel. You get the freedom and comfort of your own villa and the vast majority have private swimming pools.
