If you hire a car during your stay in Cordoba you'll be free to discover the many treasures of Andalucia which is one of the most beautiful regions of Spain. The historic cities of Seville, Granada and Cadiz are all within easy driving distance. Andalucia is also home to some spectacular national reserves with green, rolling hills and dramatic mountainous landscapes (be warned that some of the mountain roads here are at best hair raising and at worst down right dangerous!).
Drive just eight kilometres out of the city and you'll find the archaeological site of Medina-Azahara, an ancient Moorish town constructed by 10,000 workers under the orders of the Arab Caliph Abd al-Rahman. It took them 25 years to build the town which was the biggest in the region in the 10th century. The caliph's palace, on the top of a hill, was a dazzling masterpiece adorned with arches of ebony and ivory, golden monuments and ornaments studded with precious stones.
Don't miss a visit to the fabulous Alhambra Palace in Granada, 165 kilometres south east of Cordoba. The extraordinary beauty of this ancient Moorish stronghold makes it one of the most popular visitor attractions in the whole of Spain. If you're visiting in high season it's worth buying a ticket in advance from a local travel agent as visitor numbers are restricted. Beyond Granada, you'll find the snow-covered peaks of the Sierra Nevada and Europe's most southerly ski resort. On the southern side of the sierra is the awe-inspiring mountainous region of the Alpujarras where former Genesis guitarist Chris Stewart escaped from the rat race and penned his best-selling Driving Over Lemons autobiography.
Follow the course of the Guadalquivir River to the beautiful and romantic city of Seville - home of flamenco, bullfighting and one of the country's most spectacular annual fiestas. South of Seville, you can explore Spain's sherry triangle and the historic town of Jerez (famed for its "dancing horses").
Drive 160 kilometres south of Cordoba and you'll hit the beaches of the Costa del Sol - an international playground of yacht marinas, high-rise hotels, aqua parks and burger bars. From Algeciras, at the southern tip of Spain, you can take a ferry or hydrofoil over to Morocco.
When it comes to car hire companies, cheapest doesn't always mean best. These are some of the questions you should be asking before booking a car:
- Does the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort any the necessary paperwork and any problems? There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 16% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
