Cambrils and the surrounding area offer plenty of sports and leisure activities for people of all ages. From ballroom dancing and beach volleyball to golf and go-karting, you'll find it all here. And if you fancy venturing further afield there are some fascinating day trips and excursions to be enjoyed within easy reach of the town.

With its year-round mild climate, the Costa Dorada is the ideal place for outdoor sports. The average temperature is 25 degrees in summer and 12 degrees in winter so hikers, cyclists, golfers, tennis players and horse riders are rarely thwarted by bad weather.

There are three golf courses within a 20-kilometre radius of the resort. Club de Golf Reus Aiguesverds is only a few minutes drive away, near the town of Reus. This is a delightful country club with fairways set amid olive and almond trees, a converted farmhouse as the main clubhouse and an illuminated pitch for night practice.

The Bonmont Terres Noves course at Mont-roig del Camp was designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior and is considered to be one of the best in Spain. The 18-hole course has fabulous sea and mountain views and the club boasts excellent facilities including a swimming pool, pro shop, horse riding, tennis courts, a hotel and restaurant.

The nine-hole Club de Costa Dorada near Tarragona has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a children's playground and restaurant.

You'll find a wealth of other sports and leisure activities in and around the resort, especially within the town's municipal sports centre and stadium. The centre has two indoor swimming pools, sauna and hydro-massage facilities, a gym and covered pavilions for various sports such as roller hockey and roller-skating, handball and five-a-side football. The stadium has football fields, a multi-sports hall, go-kart track and shooting gallery. Various activities are held here including children's fun days, ballroom dancing and keep fit classes.

If you like walking or cycling and you're interested in the town's history and culture, the local authority has drawn up a programme of various "eco-routes" via which you can explore Cambrils and its environs. Some are short walks around the town to visit historic sites, museums and buildings, whilst others take you further afield to enjoy the surrounding countryside and places of interest in the area. Ask the local tourist information office in Paseo les Palmeres for details.

Try to fit in at least a day visit to the fascinating city of Barcelona with its mind blowing Gaudi architecture, famous fountains and Gothic cathedral. A stroll along the pedestrianised Las Ramblas with its colourful flower stalls and street cafes is a must. The kids will love the zoo which is one of the best in Spain and is home to the world's only captive albino gorilla.

Tarragona is well worth a visit with its wealth of ancient buildings and monuments including Roman aqueducts, amphitheatres and monasteries.

Local tour operators organise regular excursions to the breath taking Benedictine Monastery at Montserrat, perched high in the mountains amid extraordinary rock formations which have attracted pilgrims for thousands of years.

The Salvador Dali museum in Figueres, where some of the great Spanish painter's most important works are housed, is another popular day trip from Salou.

In the hinterland around the resort you'll find many medieval towns and villages to explore, with castle ruins, ancient walled towns and huge monasteries built in the Middle Ages.
