Cambrils is ideally placed for exploring the many delights of Catalonia - from the big family attractions nearby to the many places of historic and cultural interest in this region. Local tour operators organise regular excursions to the most popular tourist spots but if you plan to spend more than a day or two getting to know this region, hiring a car is the best way to do it.
With a rental car you'll be able to tour the many fascinating medieval towns and villages which pepper the hinterland - step back in time through castle ruins, ancient walled towns and huge monasteries built in the Middle Ages.
Tarragona is well worth a visit with its wealth of ancient buildings and monuments including Roman aqueducts, amphitheatres and monasteries.
Try to fit in at least a day trip to the fascinating city of Barcelona with its mind blowing Gaudi architecture, famous fountains and Gothic cathedral. A stroll along the pedestrianised Las Ramblas with its colourful flower stalls and street cafes is a must. And the kids will love the zoo which is one of the best in Spain. You may prefer to do this particular visit as part of an organised coach excursion.otherwise brace yourself for traffic and parking headaches.
Besides Port Aventura there are two other popular family days out a little further afield - the Aquopolis water park at La Pineda, nine kilometres along the coast from Salou, and Aqualeon, a safari and water park at Albinyana, 30 kilometres from Cambrils.
The independent state of Andorra in the Pyrenees is a beautiful place to spend a couple of days and it's sheer paradise for shopaholics (don't forget your passport).
Or head into the mountains to the north west of Barcelona to visit the breathtaking Benedictine Monastery at Montserrat. The monastery is one of the oldest of its kind in Europe and is home to the famous statue of the Black Madonna, the patron saint of Catalonia. The extraordinary rock formations of these mountains have attracted religious pilgrims for thousands of years.
Local hotels, travel agents and car hire firms all supply rental cars but if you're holidaying in high season make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment. You'll be more comfortable with air conditioning if you're traveling in July or August.
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- Does the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems? There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 16% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
For just popping around Cambrils and the local area you may decide to go for a motorbike, scooter or pushbike all of which are available for hire in the resort.
