Car hire is not essential in Calpe if your airport transfers are included in your holiday deal and your accommodation is within walking distance of the main beaches and town centre. But if you want to explore other parts of the beautiful Costa Blanca coastline and the mountainous hinterland then hiring a car is the best way to do it.
You can select and book a car on-line through one of the many local firms which offer a comprehensive range of vehicles. Most of the car hire firms here offer an airport service and all the agents in Calpe have English speaking staff so you won't find any communication problems.
If you've arranged a package holiday this will probably include coach transport to and from your accommodation so you can wait until your arrival and then use one of the local firms to hire a car for a few days of exploring. But if you're visiting in high season, it's advisable to book a car in advance or you may find your choice of vehicle is limited (or non-existent!).
If your budget runs to it, try to get a car with air conditioning especially if your holiday is in July and August when temperatures can nudge 40C.
With a car you'll be able to take a day trip up into the mountains to visit the Moorish mountain fortress at Guadalest. Visit the neighbouring town of Altea with its attractive harbour and charming old quarter. Head for the beautiful valley of Vall d'Ebo and marvel at the extraordinary Cova del Rull with its breath taking stalagmites and stalactites.
Pop down the road to Benidorm with its wealth of entertainment and big attractions or take a day's shopping and sightseeing in Valencia or Alicante.
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- Does the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems? There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 16% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
For just popping around the local area consider hiring a motorbike, scooter or bicycle.
