Calpe's beautiful stretch of coastline has something for everyone - from nature lovers and hikers to sun worshippers and adventurers.
The town and coastline for miles around is dominated by the mighty Calpe rock, the Peñon de Ifach towering 332 metres high. You can climb to the top, via a pathway which at one point is tunneled through the rock, and marvel at the Mediterranean seascape before you including (on a clear day) a view of the holiday island of Ibiza. Enjoy the sight of thousands of gulls and other seabirds which have made the rock their home.
At the foot of the rock are the salt flats, used in Roman times for salt production and now an important habitat for a variety of migratory birds including flamingoes and herons.
The coastline of Calpe consists of cliffs, small rocky coves and wide sandy beaches. The main magnets for tourists are the sandy beaches of La Fossa, Arenal-Bol and La Calalga. The beaches and promenade offer a full range of services and activities including pedaloes, jet ski-ing and wind surfing.
A wide selection of bars, cafes and restaurants service the beachfront areas supplying everything from sangria and local seafood to burgers and hot dogs.
Adventurous types can try their hand at rock climbing on the Peñon de Ifach. Or head along to the fishing port, once used by the Phoenicians and Romans, now the modern day home of the Calpe Nautical Club. Here you can enjoy a wide range of water sports and activities including scuba diving, windsurfing, water-skiing and sailing.
Sail from the club and explore the coast, stopping en route at the Cova dels Coloms, a marine cave which serves as the mouth of an underground, fresh-water stream.
The transparent waters and rocky outcrops, coves and caverns make this area perfect for scuba diving. The Puerto Blanco diving centre organises trips to local dive sites and ensures safe conditions for beginners and experienced divers alike.
Dive to depths of between six and 15 metres around the rocks of the Peñon and you'll see moray eel, octopus, sea cat, lobster, barracuda and stone fish. Divers have also made some important archaeological discoveries here.
If you prefer to keep dry while exploring this fascinating underwater world, pop along to Aquascope in the port for a trip round the Peñon de Ifach in a semi-submersible glass bottomed boat. The "submarine" trips take place throughout the summer from mid-May onwards. There are also regular boat rides to and from Benidrom (every day except Sunday).
