Several of the local beaches have won the European Blue Flag for cleanliness every year since 1995.

The biggest and most popular tourist beach is S'Abanell, 300 metres from the town centre. Flanked by the Passeig de S'Abanell seafront promenade, the beach is 2,500 metres long and provides a wealth of services and entertainment for the summer visitor.

Bars and restaurants line the promenade and the beach has showers, toilets and a Red Cross station. Deck chairs and pedaloes are available for hire and there's a good range of water sports including parasailing, sailing and windsurfing. You can also take a boat cruise along the coast.

In the centre of the resort, flanked by the Passeig de Mar, is the 510-metre long Blanes beach where you can hire deck chairs and pedaloes and take a mini cruise.

Three and a half kilometres from the town centre you'll find the lovely sandy beach of Treumal - a small beach tucked among the rocks where the lush vegetation grows all the way down to the water's edge. Park at Cala Santa Cristina to reach the beach where there are ice-cream stands and pedalo and deck chair hire.

San Francesc is a 200-metre sandy bay, two kilometres from the town. Tourist facilities here include ice-cream stands, pedalo and deck chair hire, showers and boat excursions.

There's a delightful unspoilt pebble beach at Santa Anna, three and a half kilometres from the resort. The beach has showers but no other tourist facilities.

Diving, Marinas and Water Sports

Blanes yacht marina and sailing club is based within the fishing port, to the east of the Rock of Sa Palomera which is the southernmost boundary of the Costa Brava. The marina has berths for 320 vessels and is also home to the Mola Mola diving club which provides lessons for beginners and excursions for qualified divers.

One of the most popular local dive sites is the nature reserve off L'Estartit, to the north of Tossa, where the islands of Las Medas provide a safe haven for more than one thousand species of marine life.

If you fancy a family day out, the kids will love Water World, Europe's biggest water park just outside Lloret de Mar. The park's many attractions include a 250-metre ride on a rubber raft over steep hills, round sharp bends and through dark tunnels. There are zig-zag water slides, family pools, "kamikaze" runs and hydrotherapy pools.

Have a go at the bungy jumping and you'll walk away with a "free" T-shirt and photo (you'll have earned it!).

Just south of Blanes, on the road to Malgrat de Mar, there's Marineland which makes another good day out - there are dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows, water slides, a reptile house, children's zoo and boating lake.
