Benalmadena Costa with its nine kilometres of beaches and award-winning modern marina is fast gaining a reputation as one of the most "happening" places to be on Spain's Costa del Sol. Whether you want water sports, beach bars, mini cruises or simply great food you've come to the right place!
The beautifully designed Puerto Deportivo Marina, with its fascinating architecture and wealth of quayside bars, restaurants and entertainment, is now coming a close second to glitzy Puerto Banus in terms of being the place to see and be seen on the southern coast.
The marina buzzes round the clock in high season - it's as popular with day trippers, families and water sports enthusiasts as it is with all night ravers.
This focal point of Benalmadena has gone from strength to strength since it was awarded the "Best Marina in the World" title by the British International Property magazine in 1995.
It has fully equipped berths for more than 1,000 vessels and there's a full range of watersports including diving, sailing, water ski-ing, jet ski-ing and parascending.
Local agents organise various boat trips along the coast from the marina and the famous Mississippi Willow is based here - a restored paddle steamer brought over from the USA to delight tourists with trips around the bay. You can enjoy some liquid refreshment on board while you lap up the sunshine and beautiful scenery! At night time the steamer turns into a popular restaurant and party venue.
You can do your own exploring by hiring a pleasure or speed boat from the marina.
Benalmadena Sealife Center and Touch Pool
A popular family attraction at the port is the Sea Life Centre which provides a fascinating and educational way to spend a few hours recovering from an excess of sun. Visit the Lost City of Atlantis, the Sea Horse Kingdom and take a walk along the sea bed via the Mediterranean Tunnel through which you'll be able to view everything from shrimps to sharks at close quarters.
The Touch Pool is popular with kids (and adults but they don't admit it!) - this is where you get to feed and handle rays, star fish and crabs under the expert supervision of the centre's aquarists. The attraction is open daily from 10am throughout the year.
And let's not forget the beaches - nine kilometres of natural sand, shingle and man-made beaches well served with sun beds, shades and showers. Restaurants and cafes flank the beaches and there's a generous sprinkling of the chiringuitos (beach bars) which are great places to enjoy a cold drink and some fresh seafood tapas.
Great family days out are to had at the two big water parks at Mijas and Torremolinos where the kids will enjoy kamikaze water rides, slides, whirlpools, wild rivers and waterfalls. If you're not the adventurous type, let the youngsters have fun while you take a quick dip in the gentle wave pool then retire to the nearest on-site bar or restaurant.
