When it comes to finding a place to rest your head for the night, Barcelona offers everything from sumptuous five-star hotels to cheap bunk bed accommodation in youth hostel dormitories.
Many new hotels sprung up in and around the city in the lead-up to the 1992 Olympics which gave Barcelona a mega boost in terms of its status as a prestigious tourist destination.
The Hotel Arts:
One of the most luxurious legacies of the Olympics is the Hotel Arts at the heart of Vila Olimpica (the Olympic Village) down at the beachfront.
It's an impressive modern building - the highest in Barcelona, at 150 metres, along with the nearby Mapfre insurance office block. From a distance you might be forgiven for thinking it had never been finished as it appears to be surrounded by scaffolding.it was actually designed that way!
There's nothing unfinished about this five-star hotel, run by the Ritz-Carlton group. This is the kind of place you go for some serious pampering if you can afford it. It's just 100 metres from the beach and a short hop from the famous La Rambla and Liceu Opera House.
Rooms afford panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean, luxurious apartments come with 24-hour butler service and the "spoil yourself" services include a health suite, whirlpool, massages (and a "free" overnight shoe shine!).
The Hotel Majestic:
For something equally luxurious but with more classical charm, try the imposing Hotel Majestic on the elegant Passeig de Gracia. The hotel dates back to the early 20th century but is equipped with all mod cons and decorated with countless works of contemporary art. The cuisine offered in its Drolma Restaurant is among the city's finest.
Other Accommodation in Barcelona
You'll find plenty of mid-range accommodation where you don't have to pay the earth for modern comforts and facilities. Many of the three and four star hotels are geared up to the needs of visiting business people with meeting and conference rooms, internet hook-ups and secretarial services.
Barcelona also has several "aparthotels" where you can enjoy all the freedom and comfort of self-catering accommodation combined with the convenience of on-site hotel facilities.
If you're traveling on a tight budget, try one of the city's many hostals and pensions - there's plenty to choose from especially in and around the Barri Gotic.
Many hostals have en-suite facilities and services to rival some one and two star hotels. Pensions tend to be more basic (akin to the old-style Blackpool boarding houses).
Standards vary enormously depending on what price you're prepared to pay. Pension Bahia is one of the best in town in a perfect location in Calle Canuda overlooking La Rambla and just 50 metres from Plaza Cataluña.
You'll pay a bit more here than in most other "pensiones" but you'll have the choice of a room with TV, en-suite bathroom and a view of La Rambla.
If dirt-cheap is your main criterion, there are several youth hostels (Albergue Juvenil) where you can sleep in dormitory-style accommodation for less than the price of a London cocktail.
