You'll find plenty to keep you occupied in Altea and if your holiday accommodation is within walking distance of the town you might decide there's no need to venture further afield. But if you're interested in exploring other areas of the Costa Blanca, hiring a car is the best way to do it. This is one of the most beautiful areas of Spain and with the freedom of a car you'll be able to head into the mountains, visit the neighbouring resorts and take the family for days out at some of the major attractions along this stretch of coastline.
Chances are you'll want to book a car in advance of your arrival so it's waiting for you at the airport. Most of the car hire firms here offer an airport service and all the agents employ English speaking staff so you shouldn't have any communication problems.
If your holiday deal includes airport transfers, you can wait until your arrival and then use one of the local firms to hire a car for a few days of exploring. But if you're visiting in high season, it's advisable to book a car in advance or you may find your choice of vehicle is limited (or non-existent!).
If your budget runs to it, try to get a car with air conditioning especially if your holiday is in July and August when temperatures can nudge 40C.
With a car you'll be able to take a day trip up into the mountains to visit the Moorish mountain fortress at Guadalest. Visit the neighbouring holiday resorts of Javea, Calpe, Moraira and Alfas del Pi - all very different from one another and all offering a wealth of things to see and do.
Pop down the road to Benidorm with its wealth of entertainment and big attractions or take a day's shopping and sightseeing in Valencia or Alicante.
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- Does the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems? There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 16% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
For just popping around the local area you could hire a motorbike, scooter or bicycle.
