Almuñecar has a lively nightlife in the summer months with bars and restaurants staying open late and clubs for the young (and young at heart) until the small hours. Don't expect the glamour of Puerto Banus or the bawdiness of Benidorm but with traditional fiestas held here practically every month of the year, you'll be able to party in true Spanish style.
Plaza Kelibia in the town centre is the place to go for all night entertainment in high season. The square is surrounded by bars and there's music and dancing here till sun-up.
The town has a plentiful supply of traditional tapas bars which you can tour until well after midnight, enjoying a fresh local tapa (snack) with every drink.
The aquapark at Playa Velilla provides night time entertainment with a disco served by five bars, a pizzeria, and snack bar.
There's a good range of restaurants to choose from, especially in the summer when more bars and restaurants open their doors to cope with the influx of visitors. In the local Spanish restaurants the emphasis is on fresh fish and local produce. Look out for the fresh sardines barbecued on bamboo skewers, often provided by the chiringuitos (beach bars) in the summer. Pescado a la Sal is another local delicacy - white fish (usually dorada or lubina) baked in salt to retain its own juices.
The local home-made sausages (embutidos) are tasty as are the gambas al pil-pil - prawns cooked in garlic, olive oil and chilli.
International flavours include Chinese, Indian, Belgian, French, Italian, Mexican and Moroccan - as well as the inevitable burger bars and pizza joints.
One of the most upmarket restaurants in the area is El Chaleco in Avenida Costa del Sol. This Belgian-run restaurant serves top quality home-made food with the freshest of ingredients.
If you're visiting in July you'll be able to enjoy one of the biggest events of the year - the international jazz festival which brings some of the greatest jazz musicians together for a week-long celebration in the town's Majuelo Park. Entrance is free.
August sees the main summer holiday fiesta in honour of the town's patron saint, the Virgen de la Antigua. There's a week of partying in the streets culminating in a fantastic firework display on the 15th.
On June 24th there's the Feast of San Juan when the locals celebrate on the beach and many camp out all night. At midnight the Spaniards (followed by a few Sangria-soaked foreigners!) paddle and bathe in the sea in a traditional gesture designed to cleanse the soul.
At the end of September you'll be able to join in the Fiesta of St Michael - a three-day jamboree of street parties, processions and fireworks in the town's old quarter.
Believe it or not, they even have a fiesta in honour of the local chirimoya (custard apple) harvest! A week of celebrations takes place in October culminating in a procession and fireworks on the night of the 12th.
La Noche Vieja (New Year's Eve) is one of the biggest nights of the year when the town hosts an end of year party in front of the town hall. Your mission is to eat 12 grapes at midnight - one with each chime of the clock. If you manage it you'll have good luck in the coming year. Restaurants stay open until the small hours and many stage a big New Year's Eve party (a "cotillon") with fine food, music and dancing.
