Almuñecar offers a good range of accommodation from modern four-star hotels through to Spanish-style "pensiones", hostals and campsites. There are also hundreds of self-catering apartments and villas available for rent in the area.
One of the best hotels is the four-star Bahia Tropical on the seafront at Playa del Pozuelo. This is a large but attractive modern building, two kilometres from the town centre with wonderful sea and mountain views. There are 227 double rooms, 28 suites and eight rooms for disabled guests.
The hotel rooms are built around a large, palm-fringed pool area. Facilities include an a la carte restaurant, barbecue terrace, room service, satellite TV and minibar.
Tryp Los Fenicios is a top quality four-star hotel in Herradura beside one of the most beautiful beaches on the Costa Tropical. The hotel has been built around an interior tropical garden and has a roof bar, sauna and solarium. Its Cartago Restaurant specialises in Mediterranean cuisine, particularly regional rice dishes.
You'll find plenty of one, two and three star hotels in and around the town and along the coast, like the Helios Hotel. For "cheap and cheerful" accommodation, try one of the many hostals where the facilities may be quite basic but you usually get good, home-cooked food and en-suite facilities. There are several hostals in the town, by the sea and at nearby Herradura.
There are three "pensiones" officially classed as rural accommodation where you get basic lodging in a very Spanish environment but it's guaranteed by the local authorities to be clean and comfortable. This is a good way to "go native" and save your Euros for eating out and leisure activities.
Choose from the Peña Escrita in Avenida de Europa, Casa Radino in Los Bañuelos and Cortijo la Luna at Taramay.
There are three campsites in the area. Camping Carambolo is in a beautiful setting by the sea, one kilometre east of the town. There are wood cabins for rent at the site which has a restaurant, café, bar, supermarket, barbecue area and laundry. The site is geared for disabled access.
Camping la Herradura is at the Andres Segovia promenade in Herradura. The site accepts caravans and mobile homes, has plenty of shady areas and a sports field.
Nuevo Camping, to the west of Herradura Beach, is an equally well equipped camping and caravan park with plots set amid the lush sub-tropical vegetation characteristic of this area.
There are many apartment blocks along the coast, the most prestigious being the Albayzin del Mar complex of apartments in Avenida Costa del Sol. Here you can enjoy all the freedom and comfort of your own apartment with the convenience and luxury of top class hotel facilities.
The Moorish-style apartments, about 500 metres from the sea, all have terraces with sea views, washing machines, satellite TV and phones. On site facilities include a pool with fountains, a pool bar and café, a restaurant, sauna and gym.
You'll also find plenty of other apartments and villas which are completely self contained. Most of the self-catering villas have private pools so this makes a great family holiday which often works out cheaper than a hotel as you pay a set price for the villa rather than paying per person.
