News & Newspapers Portugal - Portuguese Holiday Destinations

For a country with a small population and high level of illiteracy, Portugal has a surprisingly large number of newspapers. On both a national and regional level there is a wide range of daily newspapers, including the important Correio da Manhã, a general news daily; Público, with international and national news and a good arts section on Fridays; Diário Económico, the finance and economy paper; and the twin Diário de Notícas and Jornal de Notícas, which have good regional sections. Every week Expresso provides myriad supplements on numerous themes. The larger, serious papers have classified sections that can be useful if you are looking for a job in Portugal or somewhere to live. If you want football updates then buy A Bola, O Jogo or Record, daily papers that are 90% football and 10% other sports and have collectively the largest readership in Portugal. If football is not your thing and you want to learn more about Portuguese culture, try reading JL (Jornal de Letras) for its perspective on all things cultural.

In the Algarve in particular there are some foreign language papers published especially for the large expatriate population. They have listings for entertainment and regional events, plus adverts for accommodation, flights, language courses and sometimes work. APN (Anglo-Portuguese News) comes out every Thursday and The News is published fortnightly. The News also has regional and online editions. The Algarve Resident, Essential Algarve, and Algarve Good Life magazines are glossy magazines (mostly monthly) with sections on Portugal's news and news specific to ex-pats, fashion, finance, restaurant reviews and nightlife listings, music and travel.

In the larger towns there are newsstands that sell the larger international papers (usually with a day's delay) such as the International Herald Tribune, Daily Telegraph, Le Monde, Le Figaro and the Guardian for about €1.50 to €3, and some also sell the more popular magazines such as the Economist or Paris-Match.
