Orlando Hotels - Top Five

There are so many Orlando hotels to choose from and so many new ventures opening each year that it's difficult to choose a top five at all. With the same wild imaginations at work and the same exacting attention to detail as in the Florida theme parks, the on-site resorts are a tough lot to beat.

Best Disney hotel

Magnificently appointed and incredibly slick, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is one of the best Orlando hotels on offer. Built in the style of an elaborate Victorian mansion, this swish hotel has a chandelier-draped foyer with its own orchestra while outside a white sandy beach looks over a calm lagoon. The décor in the lavish rooms may be a bit overpowering for anyone who appreciates modern minimalism but the impeccable service, incredible views and full-service spa are enough to woo most hearts.

Best Universal hotel

Portofino Bay at Universal gives Disney a run for its money as far as hotels are concerned. This faithful reproduction of the famous Italian seaside town is complete with harborside piazza, Roman aqueduct and three swimming pools. It's a romantic location especially if you arrive by boat at night when the twinkling lights reflect off the water. The spacious rooms boast more tasteful décor than at the Grand Floridian and the facilities for children make sure you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the resort, the excellent restaurants and the on-site health spa.

Best downtown hotel

Hotels in downtown Orlando aren't cheap so if you're looking to save money you're in the wrong place. However, for luxury and old time style you can't beat the Westin Grand Bohemian. One of the world's great hotels, this place is seriously stylish with subtle lighting, decadent fabrics, dark java woods and walls hung with fine art. Although there's a luxurious spa and fitness center on site, in-room massage treatments are available and if you're a jazz fan the nightly sessions are focused around one of only two Imperial Grand Bösendorfer pianos in the world.

Best golf hotel

The grandest of Orlando hotels for golfers is the Reunion Resort and Club, a five-star resort with three 18-hole courses designed by Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. This luxury Florida community boasts all types of accommodation from one bedroom villas to multi bedroom homes, a personal concierge service, water parks, riding stables and swimming pools.

For all of the above hotels expect to pay anywhere in the region of $200 to $500 a night for a standard room.

Best affordable Hotel

A good budget option for Orlando hotels is Norment-Parry House, Orlando's oldest home. Dating from 1883 and renovated as a Victorian inn it offers excellent B&B in colourful rooms decked out with antiques, floral wallpapers and hardwood or iron bedsteads. With prices starting from about $100 a night the rooms are an excellent compromise between cheap and cheerful motels and the high prices of the more lavish resorts.
