The grande dame of Florida theme parks, Walt Disney World Florida opened in 1971 and has been evolving and improving ever since. The vast complex now consists of four theme parks, 21 resort hotels, two water parks, a sports complex, five 18-hole golf courses and a giant shopping and entertainment plaza. It's a surreal place of almost infinite entertainment where animals roam, bushes sing, children's eyes light up and everyone seems to have a permanent beaming smile.
The Big Four Parks
Walt Disney World Orlando is divided into four major theme parks. The Magic Kingdom is the quintessential Disney experience, ideal for under 12s and nostalgic adults alike. It's here that you'll find Cinderella's Castle, Main Street USA and all the classic Disney characters.
The Disney MGM Studios are a Florida Mecca for movie buffs and have some great movie rides as well as chance to see the sets of classic movies such as Casablanca and the Wizards of Oz complete with animatronic stars.
Epcot, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, is a futuristic education centre but most of the exhibits are far from high tech and the corporate sponsorship of the educational programs means that you're getting less than the full truth about world resources. There are some great futuristic rides though and the World Showcase is a fantastic reproduction of 11 countries complete with local staff and food.
The finest of Florida zoos, Disney's Animal Kingdom is a safari park where elephants and zebras can literally stop the tours as they meander across your path and the copious numbers of staff on hand means that you'll always get an answer to your questions.
Park strategy
With an average of 70,000 visitors daily it pays to have a plan for your visit to Disney World Orlando. No matter what time of year you visit, get there early in order to avoid the worst of the lines. Plan to take in the most popular rides first and make sure you get a FastPass swipe card that lets you return to board the ride at a later time without having to wait in line. Approximate wait times for lines are posted for each ride and in peak season the swipe card system allows you to take in other minor rides while you wait for your turn. And if you have your heart set on seeing the Disney fireworks or evening performances be aware that they are seasonal so call ahead to check what will be running when you plan to visit.
Tickets
There is a bewildering array of ticket pricing for passes to Disney World Orlando and the whole system gets very confusing. Single park day tickets cost about $45 and are only available at the park gate. Park Hopper tickets are available for four or five days and can be used in all four major theme parks. Unused days don't expire and can be saved for later use. A four-day Park Hopper costs about $180. The Park Hopper Plus allows access to all theme parks, Pleasure Island, the water parks and Disney's Wide World of Sports for $230 for four days. Buy your tickets as far in advance as possible as prices change frequently or visit mousesavers.com to look for discounts.
