Not surprisingly, the area is a tourist magnet and hoards of holiday makers descend upon Clearwater Beach each year. This means identi-kit hotels line the beach and family fun activities top the bill across the resort. And although somewhat overdeveloped to be called a haven of calm, Clearwater Beach really is a stunning area with plenty of hotel and rental accommodation, easy to get around on foot or bike and perfect for an action packed summer getaway.
Situated on a small island connected to the mainland by a causeway, the beach is popular for biking, parasailing and canoeing. One of the best canoe trips takes in Florida's Caladesi Island State Park where the unspoilt beaches and abundant wildlife thrill visitors. Keep your eyes peeled for armadillos, tortoises, pelicans and turtles as you relax on the beach or tramp along the trails.
Bikers can enjoy the Pinellas Trail, a 47-mile paved bicycle trail, which runs from St Petersburg to Tarpon Springs along the old railway route. With plenty of varied terrain en route from an urban environment to rides along waterways and through orange groves it makes an excellent option for bikers and skaters.
For guaranteed wildlife viewings take a trip to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a marine rescue and rehabilitation centre with fantastic displays on dolphins, sea turtles and sea otters as well as a chance to take a hands-on 'dolphin trainer for a day' program and a two-hour sealife safari with a biologist.
For those in search of a more relaxing holiday Clearwater beach is ideal for fishing, shelling and just lazing in the sun. In the evenings Pier 60 Park offers more family fun when sunset performances by jugglers, magicians, musicians, artists and craftspeople entertain the crowds.
From here it's just a short stroll to one of the many seafood restaurants that line the waterfront where you can tuck in to some excellent grouper sambos, fresh fish dinners and seafood gumbo. Sit back, relax, eat well and watch the sunset over the Gulf - could your vacation get any better than this?
