They go to observe the wide variety of mammals, reptiles and birds that only a zoo can gather in one place. Once inside Honolulu Zoo you will be magically transported to many different wildlife habitats. You can experience the roar of an African lion, or laugh at the playfulness of the chimps, as " Nairobi " the giraffe towers above you. It is a wonderful way to treat the family while on your holiday on Oahu.
The zoo's main entrance is a few minutes walk from bustling Waikiki and is snuggled between the slopes of Diamond Head, a perfect backdrop for your wildlife adventure. Honolulu Zoo is a respectable 42 acres and includes some 300 species. Gates open at 9am and the last guests are admitted at 4:30pm, so there is plenty of time to get to know the animals. While adults pay an expected fee, children's rates are very reasonable which makes the zoo a very affordable family outing.
The highlight of the zoo is the naturalized African Savanna, the Kabuni Reserve. This covers 12-acres where animals roam freely behind disguised barriers in 30 different habitats. You will encounter lions, cheetah, rhino, giraffe, zebra, hippos and many other animals usually native to the African wilderness.
Other zoo sights include the tropical forest and pacific island habitats. Here you will see Indian elephants, orang-utans and Samarian tigers. The zoo also features an interesting reptile section some special exhibits such as the Nene (the Hawaii state bird) and many native Hawaiian forest birds. There is also a small petting zoo, consisting mostly of farm animals, for children who want to get close and personal with the likes of cows, llamas and hedgehogs.
The zoo houses 28 endangered species. Its mission is to foster an appreciation of our living world. Through special educational programs and tours, employees hope to inform and educate the public in an entertaining way. A better understanding of animals can help conserve them and their natural environments.
All animals are treated with the utmost respect and care. The zoo has regularly scheduled year-round enrichment activities for all of its residents. These activities are very important for the animals' physical and mental well-being. If you are visiting the zoo near Christmas, you may witness the chimps un-wrapping their gifts or maybe join in the celebration of the tiger's birthday.
Many animals are more active at night than they are during the day. Night tours are available either side of the full moon, so if you are lucky enough to be in Honolulu during this time, make sure you visit the zoo.
