Oahu's weather is so moderate that it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between summer and winter. In fact, the native Hawaiians recognized only two seasons: KAU (May to October) when the fruit was abundant, and HOO-ILO (November - April) when the weather was a little cooler. The change between summer and winter is so slight that holidaymakers flock to Oahu all year round to experience the tropical weather.

In Honolulu the average daily maximum temperature is 84'F (29'C) and the average minimum is 70'F (21'C). The highest recorded temperature is 94'F (34'C) while the lowest is only 53'F (12'C). Even in extreme cases, the temperature range is small. Oahu's busiest time is in the Northern Hemisphere's winter months, when travelers jet into Hawaii to escape the winter chill of home and soak up the tropical sun. A visit between April and early December will ensure you miss this influx of sun worshippers.
When it comes to weather conditions the differences in temperature are very much dependent on the land's elevation: the higher the altitude, the cooler the weather. So, weather at the beach is sure to be more pleasant then that of the surrounding mountains. This is also true of Oahu's precipitation levels. Waikiki's average annual rainfall is 25 inches, whereas the Upper Manoa Valley (north of Honolulu) has an average of 158 inches. This heavy mountain rainfall sustains extensive irrigation of cane fields, and the water supply for Honolulu. Oahu is driest west of the Waianae Range, along the coast, where rainfall drops to about 20 inches a year.
Although showers occur frequently, they are usually light and brief. Severe storms are occasional and only very few hurricanes or tropical cyclones have managed to hit the Hawaiian Islands. If you want your holiday to be relatively dry, the best time to visit Oahu is May to October. June and July are the Island's driest months.
Oahu is famous for winter waves that role in from storms in the north Pacific and impacts its famous north shore beaches of Waimea Bay, the Banzai Pipeline and Sunset beach. The biggest waves generally occur between November and March. Surfers should keep this in mind when planning their holiday. Swimmers are warned that strong currents can make a beach unsafe at any time during the year, but most particularly in the winter.
Interestingly, Hawaii's two most frequent forecasts are "mostly sunny" and "partly cloudy". It seems rather difficult to distinguish between the two; you will have to ask a local to explain the difference.
