There are so many world class restaurants to choose from in Waikiki that the decision can be a daunting one. Together with Honolulu, Waikiki's restaurants are among the finest in Hawaii and cater for every taste and every budget, from gourmet to budget dining.
Starting at the top end is Bali by the Sea (941-2254) which is a great restaurant serving Pacific Rim cuisine. Pacific Rim is a unique blend of Western and Eastern flavours that make it distinctly Hawaiian. This form of cuisine has grown tremendously popular and must be tried on your stay in Hawaii. Bali by the Sea is a highly refined gourmet restaurant. The tables are arranged along a huge curving window offering spectacular views of Waikiki. They serve modern Hawaiian cuisine with such specialities as seared ahi, rack of lamb or opakapaka with kaffir lime. The wine list is enormous. A bottle of wine can cost you anywhere between $25 and $4000! For dessert try a chocolate Diamond Head overflowing with dry-ice.
For more 'New Hawaiian', allow famous TV chef Sam Choy to cook you a feast at his restaurant Sam Choy's Diamond Head (732-8645). This restaurant serves dinner only but, unlike many of his competitors, Sam Choy serves healthy portions and includes both soup and salad with all meals. When you leave Sam Choy's you will do so with a full stomach.
If you are feeling in the mood for Italian you could try Matteo's (922-5551). It is more expensive then most Italian Restaurants, but the food is good.
Family and mid-range dining is obviously popular in Hawaii with all the families and young travellers that visit Oahu's shores. The Oceanarium Restaurant (922-6111) is a great place for kids. One entire wall of the restaurant is a giant aquarium filled with tropical fish, sharks and rays. Watching them as you eat is a wonderful source of entertainment for children. The food ranges from pasta to lobster.
Keo's (951-9355) has long been proclaimed Hawaii's best Thai restaurant. Its walls are full with photos of celebrities, like Keanu Reeves and Jimmy Cater, enticed by the delicious food and trademark dishes. Despite the popularity of the place and quality if the food, the prices are very reasonable. The only drawback to Keo's is that being on busy Kuhio Ave, it can be quite noisy.
There are numerous cafes and take-away kiosks in Waikiki catering for those on a tighter budget. One such restaurant is Hawaii Seafood Paradise (946-4514). Here you can dine on high quality food at a very affordable price. They serve traditional American, Chinese and Thai cuisine.
