Shopping in Oahu & Honolulu

Shopping in Oahu is an adventure all on its own. From modern cosmopolitan malls to quaint boutiques and craft stalls, Oahu can be a shopper's paradise. Honolulu is a sophisticated and multi-cultural city and as such showcases a wide variety of stores. While trendy, high-fashion goods occupy center stage, there is a great abundance of hand-made market products. Hawaiian fashions, jewellery and craft products make great gifts to take home.

If you are looking for souvenirs then Oahu certainly has no shortage of them. From sea-shell jewellery to wooden tiki statues there are lots of shops selling tourist mementos, some bordering on kitsch. The largest collection of souvenirs is at the International Marketplace along Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki. A hundred year old banyan tree stands in the middle of this open-air shopping mall. The mall is to undergo a multi-million dollar renovation beginning in 2005; a face-lift that is being met with many contradictory opinions.

For a local flavor, visit the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet located at the Aloha Stadium near Pearl Harbor. Odds and ends, trash or treasure of every description are up for grabs at this free-for-all marketplace. Hundreds of stalls are on display with thousands of keen shoppers. Haggling is acceptable here, so be sure to practice your negotiation skills.

For the more conventional Oahu shopping experience you can visit the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Located in the heart of Honolulu, the center boasts more then 200 shops. There are some major department stores and various designer boutiques such as Christian Dior, Prada, Diesel and Abercrombie & Fitch. The Hula Supply Center in Ala Moana sells leis, hula skirts, calabash gourds and other traditional Hawaiian gear. The store is intended for Hawaiian entertainers but tourists often buy their gifts here.

On Honolulu's historic waterfront is the Aloha Tower Marketplace. This is another conventional shopping mall with a huge food court and many indoor and outdoor restaurants offering fabulous views of the Harbor. Fine handmade ukuleles can be purchased at Hawaiian Ukulele for reasonable prices.

At the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa you will find Polynesian Cultural Center Treasures. This store features souvenir items from the Polynesian Cultural Center, the number one paid tourist attraction in Hawaii. Tickets for the show are also available here.

There are many low-key malls on Oahu where the locals shop. So if the tourist trail does not appeal to you, all it takes is a little exploration and a whole retail world will open up before you.
