Oahu has particularly generous seascapes open to anyone willing to don fins and an oxygen tank. Dive sites vary in difficulty and challenge. They can be totally hospitable to the beginner or present a challenge to the more experienced diver.
Top Spots and Equipment
There are dozens of well-known dive sites around the island, many along the Waianae Coast, eastern half of North Shore and the south-eastern corner of Oahu. The clarity of the Pacific waters is remarkable, making your dive experience all the more exciting and memorable. Dive features of note include drop-offs, walls, sea caves, arches and sunken ships and planes! For example, a five minute boat ride from Kewalo Basin will take you to the wreck of the Sea Tiger, a hundred feet under water. It's a good multilevel dive with the top deck of the boat at 100 ft and the wheel house at 70 ft. Occasionally frog fish can be found on the bow. Or explore the sea cave and China Wall where there is a good chance you may spot the resident white tip reef shark.
Scuba diving is an expensive activity, but is worthwhile.
There are a number of dive shops on Oahu where you can obtain all the equipment required and instruction at all levels can be arranged. Organised dive trips are probably the best way to experience the scuba sites. A typical rate for a two-tank dive trip should be around $90.
Some noteworthy operators include Aloha Dive Shop (395-5922) at Koko Marina close to Hanauma Bay. The shop is owned by Jackie James known as the "First Lady of Diving". Here you will find over 30 years of diving experience and great customer service.
Reef Trekkers (943-0588) has established a good reputation for scuba tours as has Aqua Zone (923-3483) at the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel. They offer tours and instruction for both beginners and advanced divers.
NB. For medical reasons it is very important to remember not to embark on a scuba diving adventure within 24 hours of flying. The vast difference in pressure levels can be dangerous.
