One could class most of Oahu's exclusive hotels as resorts because they offer a wide variety of activities, entertainment and facilities. The resorts are generally self-contained, expensive yet enticing oasis's tucked away in a little corner of Oahu: an escape from the hustle and bustle of the tourist trail. It is not surprising that tourists flock to these resorts, looking for the peace and quiet of a Hawaiian vacation combined with the organised adventures and activities to make that vacation exciting.
Starting at the less expensive end of the price spectrum is Leisure/Celebrity Resorts (923-7336). Dwarfed by the surrounding hotels, this low rise place offers a little old-fashioned Hawaiian charm amongst the rapidly developing coldness of the tourism industry. The resort offers 80 units that each look out onto the garden courtyard, the swaying coconut trees and the swimming pool and spa. Rooms contain all the necessary amenities to make your stay comfortable. A shuttle bus service is provided to sites around the island.
Outrigger Resorts (369-7777) manages the most hotel and condo rooms in the state. There are three Outrigger resorts in Waikiki alone. All resorts have multiple restaurants on the property, common lounges, kid's programmes and daily in-house entertainment. It also runs its own catamaran from the beach for snorkel tours and sunset sails. Ask about their package deals that can save you quite a bit. The Outrigger knows how to treat its guests, offering plenty of services and good value for money.
The Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort (949-4321) claims to be " Waikiki's only true resort". In a quiet corner of Waikiki sits this magnificent 22 acre oasis. You are greeted at the entrance by a huge sculpture of three Hawaiian hula dancers and a reflecting pool. There are six towers altogether equalling well over 3000 rooms. The Hilton resort boasts that it is the largest resort complex in the state of Hawaii. All rooms are deluxe with all the amenities expected from a luxury resort, and most have magnificent views. There are over 20 restaurants and lounges that offer exotic and gourmet dining and entertainment. You will leave the Hilton feeling relaxed and pampered.
On the Leeward coast is the Makaha Resort (695-9544) set back in the Makaha Valley in a secluded area. The resort is a short drive to the water and is accompanied by a great golf course. Being on the west side of the island, Makaha has gorgeous sunsets and can be enjoyed whist sipping on a cocktail at the reasonably priced poolside restaurant.
Turtle Bay Resort (293-8811) stretches for 5 miles along the North Coast of Oahu. This resort offers everything from horse-riding to snorkelling, from cultural shows to long hikes through its beautiful grounds. Be sure to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
