North Shore of Oahu

The main attractions of Oahu's North Shore are its beaches and colossal waves that have come to represent the center of the surfing world. This magnificent stretch of coastline runs from Ka'ena Point to Turtle Bay and incorporates world renowned surf spots and beaches. Despite North Shore's reputation, the area is not that well equipped for tourists in terms of accommodation.

However, many people search for a holiday destination that is relatively free of all the tourist traps, so if a laid-back, sun soaked, surfing holiday is what you are after, then North Shore is a sure bet. Waimea Bay, Sunset and Ehukai are the type of laid-back stretches of sand where you can mostly find a quiet spot for yourself. In summer the waves are not all that impressive and you could find yourself wondering what all the fuss is about. But winter paints a different picture. During the cooler months of October to April the thunderous, legendary waves of up to 40ft come out to play.

These waves and beaches attract some of the world's greatest athletes who compete in numerous prestigious international surfing competitions. As a result, you could be lucky enough to catch a practice session or watch the competition itself. If you want something a little less crowded but with the same excellent waves, seek out Mokule'ia Beach and have a little practice time to yourself.

Although the beaches are the main reason for visiting the North Shore, there are other interesting sites dispersed around the area. Waimea Bay is not only the most famous surfing spot in the world, but it is also the most culturally significant destination on North Shore. The Waimea Falls Park is primarily a botanical garden with many unique species of Hawaiian flora. A trip to this park is relaxing, educational and fun. Within this garden are various cultural activities, demonstrations and lessons. One such activity is the professional diving from the 55 foot wall at the falls into the plunge pool below. There are also displays of the ancient art of Hula and carving demonstrations. Located within the park is Hale O Lono Heiau, one of the island's largest and most ancient temples and is dedicated to the god Lono. The park also offers numerous outdoor activities such as horse riding and mountain biking.

If action is more your thing, you can visit the Dillingham Airfield near Waialua and arrange a flight in a bi-plane, a silent soar in a glider or a daring sky dive.

The North Shore has a lot to offer, just remember that accommodation is limited and your best bet would probably be to rent a holiday home while there.
