Oahu's Lodging Options - Budget Accommodation

Finding lodging on Oahu is as easy as finding sand in the Sahara. The amount of accommodation available is staggering; you can basically get anything at any price. Traditional lodging is dorm type, share accommodation, catering mostly (but not strictly) for young international travellers and backpackers. Lodging is the cheapest accommodation option with prices from $14 to $25 for a dorm bed in one of Waikiki's half dozen hostels.

Although these hostels cannot compare to Oahu's exclusive hotels, lodging is a great option if you are travelling on a budget and don't mind sacrificing luxury for cost effectiveness and convenience. Most rooms are shared with five to eight people; however private rooms are available at a higher rate.

Most of these hostels are found in the Waikiki / Honolulu area; however there is a handful of lodge-type accommodation located on the North Shore.

Located in Waikiki is the Banana Bungalow Waikiki Beach Hostel (924-5074). This is part hostel, part bargain rate hotel. This central tower block is known as a great resource for budget travellers. There are about sixty rooms, all containing an en-suite bathroom, a balcony, telephone and TV. Half these rooms are 6 to 8 bed dorm rooms, but the other half consist of private doubles for just over $55 a night. The Banana Bungalow also offers free airport pick-up and inexpensive internet access.

The Hale Aloha Hostel (926-8313) is located in the heart of Waikiki, just minutes away from the beach. It is the only member of Hostelling International - American Youth Hostel Association. Dorm rooms are sexually integrated and thus you have to be over 18 to stay unaccompanied by an adult. This is a clean and safe option for backpackers and it is recommended that you book at least two weeks in advance.

In Honolulu there is the 'male-only' YMCA Nu'uanu (536-3556) downtown and near the university is the 'women-only' YWCA Fernhurst (941-2231). Women around the world have found this to be a safe accommodation option in Honolulu.

The North Shore offers its fair share of budget lodging, targeting the surfers who religiously flock to its shores. The YMCA Camp H.R. Erdman (637-4615) is named after a famous Hawaiian polo player who was killed in the 1930's. This is a full service facility and is used as a summer camp for children. Throughout the remainder of the year it is a retreat venue for various organisations. Cabins are usually rented to groups of 8 or more or you can camp for about $50 a site, for up to 10 people.

The Surfhouse (637-7146) offers both shared and private rooms. You can stay in the bunkhouse for about $15 a night or in a private room from $40 to $45 a night. Due to the longer stays and the nature of the lodgers this is a place of great camaraderie that will make you feel comfortable and surrounded by friends.
