Scouting Honolulu's Restaurants

The area around the University of Hawaii has a wide variety of ethnic restaurants, coffee shops and health food stores. Most cafes and restaurants cater for students so you can expect reasonable prices. Try Coffeeline (947-1615) for your daily dose of caffeine and grab a vegetarian curry at Down to Earth (947-7678).

As to be expected, Chinatown features many Honolulu restaurants which have incorporated an Asian flare into their cuisine. The Maunakea Marketplace Food Court is home to numerous family owned stalls that will supply you with cheap, but good Asian snacks. Legend Seafood Restaurant (532-1868) is Chinatown's seafood specialist with a view of the Nu'uanu Stream. The lunchtime dim sum trolleys are not to be missed.

Other great 'mall dining' areas include the Ala Moana Centre ; offering a spectacular array of tasty take away outlets for those in a hurry. For a leisurely lunch try out California Pizza Kitchen (941-7715), a post-modern pizzeria on a bright deck n the top floor.

Restaurant Row, in the Aloha Tower Marketplace, is a mall that consists entirely of restaurants. Although the setting may not be particularly attractive, you are sure to get value for your money. It is home to such places as Ocean Club (526-9888), a loud, boisterous bar where downtown's after-work crowd hang out. On the other end of the spectrum is the trendy Sunset Grill (521-4409) . With its pleasant upscale atmosphere, this Honolulu restaurant is a favourite of discerning diners from around the world.
