The majority of tourist hotels are concentrated around Waikiki; however, the hotels in Honolulu are some of the cheapest on Oahu. Most are clean, basic establishments located on the fringe of Waikiki, near the airport or university and one or two noteworthy hotels in downtown Honolulu. Due to the rapid development that has gripped Hawaii in the past few decades, there is an abundance of accommodation to suit every taste and budget.

Honolulu Hotels: One by One
There are some up-scale hotels around Ala Moana, located near the beach but away from the tourist traps and bustle of Waikiki. The Ala Moana Hotel (955-4811) is just off the Waikiki strip between Ala Moana and Kapi’olani Boulevards. It has all the comforts you would expect from a luxury hotel with a swimming pool, nightclub and restaurant. There is a walking ramp connecting the hotel directly with the Ala Moana Shopping Center for guests shopping convenience. The price of a room ranges from mid-range to the more expensive suites.
The Pagoda Hotel (941-6611) is behind Ala Moana Shopping Center. Rooms are conventional and comfortable and are located in one low-rise and one high-rise tower. This hotel is tucked away from the action so you get pretty good value for your money. There are numerous package deals available and big discounts for local residents.
One of the closest hotels to the airport is the Plaza Hotel (836-3636), a very convenient location for business travel. The rooms are small but reasonably priced. Discounts are offered to AAA members, government employees, seniors and military personnel.
The Manoa Valley Inn (947-6019) located near the University of Hawaii is Honolulu’s more relaxing option. This elegant, early 1900 building is on the state registers of historic places and offers reasonable room rates and a continental breakfast included. Sit on one of the wicker chairs on the lava-rock-colonnaded back porch and linger over breakfast.
Downtown Honolulu only has a few noteworthy hotels. The ResortQuest at the Executive Center (539-3000) is the only upscale hotel in downtown Honolulu. This triangular glass and steel building is in the heart of the financial capital which makes it a very convenient location for those travelling for business reasons. The rooms are spacious and air-conditioned and have views of the city. Substantial discounts of up to 50% are offered for corporate and government guests.
Although Honolulu cannot compete with Waikiki in the accommodation department, there are a number of hotel options available to those who do not wish to stay in Waikiki and the heart of the tourist trail.
