The fish most commonly caught off Oahu's shore include: marlin, ahi, ono, mahimahi and even the occasional deep-water snapper. Deep sea boats normally troll the generally calm waters along the Waianae Coast, from Barbers Point to Kaena Point. Most of the fleet moors in Kewalo Basin in Honolulu. This is found along Moana Boulevard next to Fisherman's Wharf. The harbor is an impressive sight in itself, and worth a visit. If contemplating a fishing trip, it is a good idea to visit the harbor the day before you leave to suss things out. Scout out a few of the boats and talk with returning captains and fisherman to determine the charter that would best suit you.

Should you require a charter organization for any reason call Hawaii Charter Skippers Association on 591-9100. Rates for a day's fishing range from $50 per person up to $1000 for the whole boat. If deep sea fishing isn't your thing, or you would prefer the stillness of freshwater fishing, there are two, state-maintained freshwater fishing areas on Oahu. The Nu'uanu Reservoir no 4 in the Ko'olau Mountains is a 25 acre restricted watershed above Honolulu. This site is only open for fishing three times a year, in May, August and November. Species regularly caught here are tilapia and Chinese catfish.
The Wahiawa Public Fishing Area is essentially a 330 acre irrigation reservoir near the town of Wahiawa. Fish caught here include: large and smallmouth bass, sunfish, tucunare, channel catfish, Chinese catfish, snakehead, carp and oscar.
