Oahu's car rental companies can provide an effective means to explore the island in more depth and at your leisure. There is an abundance of car rental agencies on Oahu. Each one is competitive and while their prices are usually similar, it is worthwhile to shop around for deals and promotions. For most car rental companies, the weekly rates work out cheaper then the straight daily rate. Rates vary depending on the season, time of booking and current promotions, and generally include unlimited mileage.
Officially, Honolulu ranks as having the lowest car rental rate of the hundred largest cities in the United States. The amount of competition drives prices down and is great for the traveller. It is important to make reservations in advance or you will get a shock paying a higher rate, or even worse, not getting a car at all. If you belong to a frequent flier program or auto club, you may be eligible for discounts, so always ask about that. Also, ask your hotel if they have any deals with the car rental agencies. Having a major credit card greatly simplifies the renting process. Some agents will not rent a car to you without one. Others will accept cash or travellers cheques and a substantial deposit. Some even do employment verification and a credit check before handing over the keys. If possible, use a credit card and save all the hassles and headaches. All major chains have outlets at the airport. The main rental companies are Avis (800-321-3712), Budget (800-527-0700), Dollar (800-800-4000), Hertz (800-654-3131) and National (800-227-7368).
If you are planning on visiting any of the other islands while in Hawaii, Avis offers a multi-island discount as long as you a car for a minimum of five days. Dollar is one of the more liberal agencies, and one of the only ones that rent to under 25-year-olds.
There are other smaller agencies available on Oahu ; however you are better off staying with the larger, better-known companies. Their cars tend to be more modern and reliable.
As for insurance, the rent fee includes any liability you may incur on other people and property, but not on the actual rented vehicle.
