There are 70 000 rooms available in Hawaii and 37 000 are on Oahu. 33 000 of these are in Waikiki alone! This is a place where development and tourism has gone wild, but the upside of this is that the competition keeps prices low, and there are all the kinds of accommodation you can imagine.
Some of these accommodations are living landmarks and historical mementos of an era gone by, when the millionaires came by ship to play on the untouched beaches of these isolated islands. A prime example of such a hotel is the Sheraton Moana Surfrider (922-3111) built in 1901. Expensive restoration has managed to preserve the colonial style of the original building.
Then, in the 1960's, mass tourism hit the shores of Hawaii, bringing with it a new kind of tourist, the average family! Hotels sprang up at an alarming rate to accommodate this huge new demand and the tourist industry kept growing until the saturation became obvious and a halt was placed over new development. The result of this is of course, styles of accommodations that suit everyone's taste and pocket, from the backpacker hostels to the ritzy, luxurious hotels.
There are no campgrounds in Waikiki and camping at Honolulu's only ground - the Sand Island State Park - is not recommended. However, you can camp in most county parks on Oahu for free and in state parks for $5 a night. Other then camping, the cheapest Oahu accommodation option available is a dorm bed for about $20 in one of Waikiki's half dozen hostels, heavily geared towards young backpackers. However, if you don't mind the lack of sea view and walk to the beach, you can get an adequate hotel room for around $50 a night.
There is little point choosing a hotel expressly for the swimming pool. Other then the top of the line properties, most pools are squeezed onto roof-top terraces surrounded by hundreds of overlooking rooms of the surrounding hotels. A pool is not necessary because the ocean is on your doorstep and the beautiful beach is always beckoning!
In the five stars hotels, prices for deluxe accommodation can run from $250 a night to way more. Condos may be a better option and better value for money. Condos offer the benefit of a fully furnished, self-catering apartment from as little as $150 a night. Also see information on Hawaii Travel - Big Island Travel - Kauai Travel - Lanai Travel - Maui Travel - Molokai Travel - Hawaii Cruise Guide
