Looking for a beautiful holiday filled with beaches, history and friendly people? Try Mexico. If you start your holiday in the popular Cancun area, you could work your way down to a lovely place called Tulum. This is listed as one of the top 5 destinations in Mexico on our new website. Tulum is about 130 km from Cancun and is easily accessed by public transport or you could drive yourself. It is a little town in the south east of Mexico near enough to Cancun if you are in the mood for lively fun but it is also far enough from the popular but crowded Cancun to keep you sane. Tulum is perfect. It has sun, sea, stunning beaches, and loads of history. The Mayan ruins of Tulum are a must see. They stand on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
Tulum was once an important trading port for the Yucatan’s east coast. Tulum city is walled and in it you will find ruined palaces and elevated temples. The most impressive structure is “El Castillo”. This is the temple of the Frescos. You can trek through the forest, enjoy a leisurely walk through the Mayan village and climb the ruins. The main highway (307) has several souvenir shops and some gorgeous restaurants. You will find the banks, shops and chemists along this stretch of road as well as the bus station. Don’t forget to buy lots of water because Tulum gets really hot.
If people watching is a favorite pastime of yours, travel further south toward the Guatemala border to San Cristobal de la Casas. It is a Colonial town situated in the highlands of the state of Chiapas. Here you can watch people from more than 30 different Indian tribes, all descendants of the ancient Mayas. These people are well known for their woven textiles and intricate craft skills.
While you are visiting Cristobal de la Casas, it is worth while stopping for a look at ‘Na Bolom’ which was the home of the well respected archaeologist Frans Bloom and his wife. It is now a Museum, a cultural meeting place and a guesthouse. Cristobal de la Casas is not a hugely touristy place so you can enjoy the people and the country without being overrun by tourists and I believe a night at the guesthouse will be an experience you won’t forget.
Our new site on Mexico could have a lot more added to it but for now it is worth taking a look at the very informative information we have for you. If you want more info, let me know.
