Looking for unspoiled Spain? Then head for the Balearic Island of Mallorca (Majorca) and on to a little village north west of the Island called Deia. There you will encounter beauty that has escaped the masses of tourists and rampant ongoing building that has become all too familiar in most of Spain and the Balearic Islands.
Deia is a super little village. It is famous for its arty visitors like the English poet, Robert Graves and Chopin. If you are arty and looking for inspiration, this is the spot for you. For accommodation, try the La Residencia if you can afford it. It is a bit posh but without all the airs and graces.
If you are looking for lots of sandy beaches, then Deia is not the place for you. The village does have a beach you can enjoy but Deia is the spot to hit if you want piece, beauty and inspiration. You still get the sun, sea and sangria but without all the rowdy over crowded bars, beaches and restaurants.

The Castillo Hotel Son Vida in Palma (Majorca or Mallorca) will be re-opening on the 4th of February. This is one of the hotels we recommend on our sight under Palma Accommodation. The hotel has been closed for a year for renovation. They are offering a 2 day and a 5 day opening special between the 4th of Feb and the 31st March. Click on Castillo Hotel Son Vida and book directly with them.
For those of you who don’t know the hotel and the area allow me to fill you in. The hotel was originally a medieval castle built in the XIII century. It is surrounded by Sub-tropical Park and has views of the Bay of Palma to die for. The hotel, which is filled with beautiful antiques and paintings, has its own 18 hole golf course. It is one of the most highly recommended luxury hotels in Palma.
As for Palma, it is the capital of the Balearic Islands and if you have not been and are wondering what the attraction is, please allow me to direct you to our sight IndigoGuide for more information. The main attractions include the Royal Palace, the Stock Exchange, the Cathedral and the Castle of Bellver, oh and don’t forget the gorgeous weather!

My first ever visit to Spain was a trip to Majorca/Mallorca and what an event it was. Not only did we go through the mill to get visas (being on South African passports) but when we got there we had to learn in 2 seconds flat how to drive on the right hand side of the road. We hired a little car (on a little budget), had four people and luggage in this little thing and no air-conditioning in the car. Then we had to make our way to our hotel (about 30 minutes drive) in the dark with a very limited map, badly marked road signs and no driving experience in the country. We also spoke absolutely NO Spanish at all. That was the longest 3o minute drive I have ever been on. Next time we hired a car in Spain we made sure it had climate control and that we arrived in the day time. Any tips about first time car hire for those wet behind the ears like me?

I (Steve) am originally from South Africa. In the year 2001 we went on our first European holiday to Majorca - we immigrated to the UK in 1999. What a fantastic place. We were there when England beat Germany 4 nil. Give us you feedback - what places and tips has this journalist missed?
