So you must be wondering when winter falls? Winter typically graces Molokai in December and extends through to March. While you probably will not notice too much of a difference in daytime temperatures, the nights take on definite chill (below 60°F). Rainy days are also typical of this season and are the only real damper to the Molokai weather setup. Summers are sizzling with highs sometimes of 85°F, the temperatures would probably be a lot higher if it wasn't for the trade winds that course over the island.
Back to the winter rains - the western side of the island, which includes the area around The Ranch and The Kaluakoi Resort, only receives on average 12 inches of rain a year. The eastern side of Molokai on the other hand receives a substantially larger amount. This has been attributed to the fact that this side of the island is the leeward side and is therefore the part of the island the moisture rich trade winds hit first. Visitors should also be aware that if they are thinking of visiting Molokai during winter they stand a good chance of doing some whale watching - seeing this is the time when the humpback whales migrate back to the shallow waters surrounding the islands.
Water temperatures
Now that we know what to expect on dry land, we need to delve in to what the waters surrounding "the friendly isle" are like. The waters around Molokai's beaches usually hover around 80°F during summer and spring. Come winter, the temperature seldom drops more than 3 or 4 degrees. In line with this, many of the surfers out there would probably like to know how the surf conditions vary throughout the year. You would be right to expect a change in surf conditions between seasons and rightly so. Winter sees the north and west shorelines receiving the best surf conditions, while the south side of Molokai remains relatively placid.
Micro Climates
Molokai's weather has help cultivate micro-climates through out the island. The central area around Hoolehua and Kualapuu consist of parched flat plains, moving along highway 450 to the western side of the island we encounter sun drenched semi-arid landscapes. Both of these are a stark contrast to the rainforests, valleys and craggy mountains that inhabitant the eastern shores. These pockets of climates make for a myriad of adventures and discoveries.
The chance that the weather will interfere with your Hawaiian vacation is highly unlikely, so relax, shrug off all worries and enjoy the beauty and innocence around you. Welcome to Molokai!
