The resorts and condos that are scattered all over the area are nice, but all their added "frills" seem to distract visitors from that "island experience" they initially came for.

It is now becoming more and more popular for people to go for a more simplified Molokai lodging, which usually takes the form of a beach cottage.
Below, we have tried to give a helpful overview of some of the more popular Molokai cottages.
On the east side of the island we find the two bedroom Aloha Beach House (808-828-1100). This is an ideal family cottage rental with an open plan living, dinning and kitchen area that further emphasizes the already roomy interior. In true American style, this Molokai lodging also features a charming porch that provides the perfect place to relax and enjoy the Hawaiian sunsets while dinning or enjoying a "mai tai." The kitchen hosts an array of modern appliances that makes cooking a pleasure - potential guests will be happy to hear that there is even a dishwasher! Supplies are just a short walk away at the "Neighborhood Store", so you will never be left short. In the event you go with young children, there is satellite TV and a full entertainment system to keep them occupied, but chances are they will be too busy exploring their new playground.
The Country Cottages at Pu'u O Hoku Ranch (808-558-8109) are also on the lush eastern side of Molokai. The ranch is very much "alive", and children are often quite excited by the tremendous amount of "cattle activity" that still goes on. The accommodation can be described as comfortably rustic, - a perfect blend of the charm of the past and the convenience of modern day appliances! There are two cottages on the property:
- 1 double room, 1 twin room and two bathrooms
- 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms (ideal for those super-sized families)
Being on a ranch these island lodgings offer guests the chance to do a bit of horse riding and hiking. The Country Cottages also have private access to a portion of the beach.
The Dunbar Beachfront Cottages (808-558-8153) are privately owned and can be found on the beaches of the island's east coast with clear views of Maui and Lanai. When it comes to Molokai lodging you will not get anything as tranquil and as restful as the green and white "Puunana" and "Pauwalu" plantation cottages. Both have a bounty of modern cons, including a full kitchen, VCR and TV, laundry facilities and an impressive observation deck.
The Beach Village (808-660-2710) run by the Sheraton is our final lodging recommendation. Guests live under safari-type tents that are erected above solid wooden raised areas which house not only queen sized beds, but also private bathrooms. In keeping with the eco-tourism hype, The Village utilizes solar lighting and heating as well as naturally composting toilets. Talk about worlds colliding - these "tent units" are even serviced by a maid! At the heart of The Village is the pavilion which serves food and is the where the nightly entertainment can be found.
