Kayaking the Pacific
During the summer the ocean waters are at their calmest making them conducive to a spot of open water kayaking. One of the most appealing attributes about this particular activity is that it gives people the independence and flexibility to paddle from one far-off gorge to another, thus allowing them to create their own adventure. This said; one point has to be stressed - only experienced kayakers should travel unsupervised, as only a veteran is able to navigate through ocean swells. The following companies offer guided tours and hire out kayaks: Molokai Rentals and Tours (808-553-5663), Molokai Outdoor Activities (808-553-4477) and The Sheraton Molokai Lodge (808-660-2710).
Scuba Diving on Molokai
The waters around this small Hawaiian Island are a bustle with a rich source of marine life from sea turtles and sharks to manta rays and tropical fish. The best diving can be found off shore, around the very small island of Mokuhooniki, located on the east side of Molokai. The scuba company that comes highly recommended is Bill Kapuni's Snorkel and Dive (808-553-9867). They not only rent equipment and provide coaching, but they also have a vessel and years of experience!
The Snorkeling Experience
Molokai's shores are not nearly as boisterous as the waters further out, making them relatively snorkel friendly. May to half way through September is the best time for this activity, as this is when the Pacific is at its calmest. There are four main dive hot spots: Kawaikiunui, Pohaku Moiliili, Kapukahehu Beach and Murphy Beach Park. Equipment can be rented from Molokai Rentals and Tours and Molokai Outdoor Activities (see numbers for kayaking.) Tours are run by Bill Kapuni's Snorkel and Dive (see above.)
Molokai's Horseback Activities
The Pu'u O Haku Ranch (808-558-8109) is probably the best place on the island to indulge in a bit of horse riding. All the trails are loaded with some of the island's most breathtaking views - waterfalls, the ocean, and the neighboring sister islands of Maui and Lanai. As you might be aware Molokai is paniolo country (Hawaiian cowboys), and if you are interested in witnessing and possibly even participating in a "paniolo roundup" then we recommend contacting the Sheraton Molokai Lodge on 808-660-2710.
Hiking the Island
This is definitely one of the more popular of Molokai activities. The Pepeopae Trail is not only a hike but a journey through a unique eco-system. Extending over 3 miles the trail usually takes on average an hour and half from start to finish. The trail gains altitude quickly and sees hikers moving through quite an intense cloudforest that opens out onto the Pepeopae Bog. Once navigating through the bog the trail ends at the Pelekunu Valley overlook. The bog is a fragile eco-system so hikers are please asked to refrain from moving off the trail and touching any of the mosses, ohias or other flora.
