Molokai Accommodation Options

Unexpectedly Molokai accommodation rates seem to be significantly lower than the rates of the other Hawaiian Islands. This is probably partly due to the fact that the island has resisted any extensive development and opted to follow the less commercialized road of eco-tourism.

Further more, accommodation costs seem to significantly lower because most vacation rentals, condo units and indeed hotel suites have a fully fitted kitchenette which is used in lieu of the overwhelming choice of restaurants available.

Primarily Molokai's accommodation is restricted to:

- Charming bed and breakfasts
- Self Contained condos
- And quaint lodgings often in the form of beach cottages.
If you would like to access more information, including a list names, booking details and contact information, then please see the options under accommodation on the left hand menu.

Bed and breakfasts, lodgings and vacation rentals all offer a degree of privacy that cannot be matched by a hotel or a resort; they are also a lot more personal. This said; Molokai only really has one hotel (Hotel Molokai) and one up market lodge with the island's only real formal restaurant (The Sheraton Lodge). The hotel has a unique A-frame design that is adorned with the very modest of facilities, while the lodge is situated on The Ranch and has a true "paniolo" flavor coupled with some of today's best luxuries.

Molokai Accommodation: Camping
For those who are looking for slightly more "raw" accommodation, there are camping sites available. If you are going camping there are two options- that's if you exclude the luxury "tent-a-lows" offered by the Sheraton Beach Village. The first site can be found at Papohaku Beach Park, which is conveniently serviced by a restroom, shower area, and BBQ area. Supplies are also just a short distance away in the town of Maunaloa. Unfortunately there is a maximum stay limit which is set at three days and permits can be obtained through Maui County Parks Department (808-553-5663).

The second site can be found in the Palaau State Park, which is home to the ironwood forest and is a far cooler alternative to that of Papohaku Beach mentioned above (especially during summer!) An added bonus about this Molokai accommodation site is there is no charge for pitching your tent; however, a camping permit still needs to be obtained. To get a permit you will need to contact the State Division of Parks (808-567-6618.)
