The Melia Puerto Vallarta Beach Resort

The Melia Puerto Vallarta is an all-inclusive beach resort, just like the other Melia hotels in Mexico. This means that meals, drinks and entertainment are included in the price of your stay, along with use of the beach and the largest swimming pool in Puerto Vallarta. (The pool also has a swim-up bar.)

Most guests eat lunch in La Palapa, an open-air buffet restaurant serving delicious Mexican food. There are also three fine-dining restaurants in the Melia Puerto Vallarta: Vitrales serves Italian dishes, La Palapa Grill serves à la carte grilled food and Los Azulejos serves food with an international flavor. However, most packages only allow you one dinner in each of these fine restaurants per stay. Most nights, you will enjoy the buffet dinner in Quetzal, whose food changes according to the theme of the evening.

Such daily theme nights are part of the entertainment that makes the Melia Puerto Vallarta a good resort for families. The theme could be anything from "Mexican fiesta" to "tropical paradise", but whatever it is, the food and the evening shows are designed to fit in with the program. Provision for children is generally very good, including kids' clubs and even a "VIP" check-in area for the young ones. The kids' clubs are open daily between 10am and 5pm, and these facilities are included in the package. They are split into age groups: 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16. Activities are appropriate to the age group, and include mini-discos, tennis coaching and climbing walls. Younger children can join "Club 0-4", where qualified nannies supervise an indoor play area. The water gardens in the grounds contain plenty of wildlife to keep children amused, too.

One of the main criticisms leveled at the Melia Puerto Vallarta is that the beach is inadequate. If you're expecting endless expanses of white sand, you will be disappointed.

The beach at the Melia is small and rocky. However, you need to weigh this against the size of the swimming pool and the large artificial lake with tropical gardens.

The price of a room at the Melia Puerto Vallarta varies depending on the season. (See our page on weather for information about when to go.) You can check out room rates for your chosen set of dates by going to the Melia website (click here). Expect to pay at least $150 per person per room. However, in keeping with the family-friendly nature of the location, you can get very good deals on children's accommodation, particularly off-peak. Some deals allow children under six to stay for free when accompanied by two or more adults.
