Puerto Vallarta Lodging Guides - Budget Hotel Accommodation

Puerto Vallarta lodging doesn't have to mean staying in a resort, a hotel, a luxury villa or even ordinary self-catering accommodation. (Although if you are interested in those options, our other accommodation pages will give you some useful advice.) Many visitors to Puerto Vallarta find lodging in unexpected places - whether that means hostels, campsites, renting a hut or even staying with a Mexican family.

Hostels are a good option for cheaper Puerto Vallarta lodging. The best-known hostel in Puerto Vallarta is Vallartasol, in the north hotel zone. You can get a bed for the night there from $18 per person per night. Rooms have kitchenettes and air-conditioning. Twin rooms cost more than rooms with double beds - around $30 per person per night.

There is also a campsite in Puerto Vallarta - the Puerto Vallarta Trailer Park, to be found a couple of miles north of the hotel zone. You won't be able to camp on any of the beaches around the middle of the bay, but at Yelapa (a southern beach) there are occasionally huts to rent. Hotel Lagunita, near the bay in Yelapa, has huts to rent for between $35 and $50 per person per night in low season and between $60 and $80 in high season. Accommodation is fairly basic, but you get a private bath and the hotel also has a restaurant and beach bar.

As for lodging with a family in Puerto Vallarta, this option is usually only available if you are connected with a language school, whether as a student, a teacher or on an exchange trip. Some visitors combine their stay with a Spanish course and take advantage of the schemes available, but this isn't an easy way of getting cheap accommodation. Rates for staying with a family are fairly low - $15 and $25 per night for a room - but the accommodation schemes are only for people who are serious about Spanish. You will be expected to enrol on the course with appropriate ID and attend class every day to be able to stay with a participating family. You will almost certainly have to pay course fees too.
