Maui's Weather

See - www.wunderground.com for current weather.

Maui's weather patterns are similar to that of Lanai and Molokai, with relatively warm air temperatures being prevalent throughout the year. The peak of summer is in August and then winter sets in at around January. Although there is not a great temperature difference between the seasons, visitors will find that winters are without a doubt a lot wetter! The ocean temperatures fluctuate annually between 75 and 80 ºF. Bear in mind that the previous comments are a generalization since the topography of Maui often results in the different areas experiencing their own unique weather conditions. This page tries to give you a rough idea as to what to expect as you travel round the island.

The South / West Region

Starting in the south, the leeward slopes of the mountain ranges are typically drier making Kihei and Wailea two of the warmest and driest points on the island. However, as you move further down the coast in the direction on La Perouse Bay, the trade winds start making an appearance. Funnily enough, it has been found that the sunny and hot conditions promote windier conditions. Why is this you ask? - Well this is because off shore air currents rush in to fill the void created by the heated air rising. In summer temperatures can go as high as 86ºF, and winter fall to only 80 ºF. The rainfall here is very minimal and often it only ever rains for the equivalent of one week of the entire year.

North Maui Weather

Weather conditions in the northern part of Maui around Kaanapali and Lahaina are determined by the trade winds. Lahaina's position shields it from their full effect, resulting in August temperatures reaching 88ºF and January being a comfortable 82ºF. Moving towards Kaanapali the winds start becoming stronger bringing cool breezes that tip the ocean with whitecaps. By the time you have moved up to Kapalua the winds are even stronger and the weather becomes a lot wetter with frequent periods of drizzle. Kapalau has been deemed to have the worst holiday weather. Veering round the corner we come to Kahului. Due to the presence of Haleakala this town gets the highest concentration of wind on the island - making it a virtual heaven for windsurfers worldwide.

East / Upcountry Conditions

This area of the island, particularly around Hana, has beautiful weather and is noted for its high doses of sunshine. This said, in winter the trade winds have been known to bring bouts of rainfall that extends over several days. With regard to temperatures this part of Maui has highs of 84ºF and lows of 78ºF.

The Upcountry area around Kula and Pukalani are susceptible to a weather condition known as the Maui vortex which creates a section of clear sky as the trade winds move into the central valley of the island.
