The best Maui surfing can be found on the west side of the Island on the coast line that runs past Lahaina. This sport is largely dependant on the swell-direction and pros therefore know what waves they are looking for - it's a personal thing. So we recommend hiring a car and driving along the coast between the 33 and 18 mile markers. There are however a few "old faithful" Maui surfing haunts, such as south of marker 18 (just down from the Launiupoko), Lahaina Harbor is always a treat and for the more daring we recommend going northwards to Honolua Bay.
If you are looking for the crème de la crème of waves then there is only one place to go...Jaws. The surf here can curve up to 70 feet and only a select few have mastered the waters here. Surfing "Jaws" unsupervised is highly dangerous and discouraged.
What about us beginners? If you are a complete novice then we suggest you start your lessons in Lahaina, which is home to a number of Maui's best surf schools. " Goofy Foot Surf School " has an excellent reputation and they guarantee that their understudies will ride a wave or their money back - pretty impressive. Typically lessons take place in a group format with a two hour session costing in the area of $60. Private lessons are also available but just over double the price. Want another option? - then head down to "Surf Dog Maui" who also have top notch instructors to guide you through your first steps to becoming a true Maui Surfer!
Come on holiday with no equipment? Have no fear; Kahului has a number of quality surf shops including: Second Wind Maui (808-877-7467), Neil Pryde Maui (808- 877-7443) and Hi Tech (808-877-2111.) If you are in Lahaina then nip down to the Honolua Surf Co (808-661-8848.)
