There are literally miles and miles of coastline to discover and explore, but for many visitors time is of the essence. This section therefore tries to give the best Maui snorkeling locations, with as many tips along the way as possible to ensure you take home an unforgettable underwater experience.

Generally speaking, much of the best snorkeling can be found in the south part of the island. The western side also holds a few treasured sites.

South Maui Hot Spots

The "Fishbowl / Aquarium" is a magnificent cove that has been recommended by many snokelers and is regarded as a "must see." Close to here is La Perouse Bay which also holds many spectacular coves, although snokelers are advised to only focus their dive on the northern side of the bay. These coves are full of number of species of fish - parrotfish, angelfish, pufferfish and damsel fish to name just a few. To get the most out of your snorkelling experience we recommend picking up a book to help identify as much of the marine life as possible.

The stretch of water that runs between Poolenalena Beach and Palauea Beach is another favorite haunt. As with most areas this one has a large expanse of coral and to preserve this habitat snorkelers are discouraged from standing or holding on to any of the coral.

Three other good spots are: the expanse that divides Kamaloe I and II, the waters between Maluaka and Black sand Beach and finally the waters south of Wailea Beach.

West Maui Snorkeling

Lying in the midst of the 8 th and 9 th mile makers is what is called the "Scenic Lookout" which is not only a great snorkeling site but a real gem from which to do a spot of whale watching. Next up is an area close to Kaanapali Beach called Black Rock, which is an expanse of lava that divides the beach in two. Oneloa in Kapalua, otherwise known as Big Beach, has become known as thee Maui beach and is widely rated for its fantastic underwater sites, making it the ideal snorkeling and diving spot.
