Maui's Kihei is just one of the islands little beach towns, a water lovers paradise. The word Kihei means "cape" and draws reference to the traditional tapa cloth cloaks, and is pronounced key-hay.

This little settlement boasts some of the island's driest and sunniest weather that stays true even when the rest of the island is covered by rain clouds - thus further emphasizing the "beach town" feel. Originally an arid area, it was only when water was piped over from the west side of the island that Kihei began to blossom into what it is today.

Kihei is home to a series of white sand that stretches over 10 miles from Maalaea all the way down to Keawakapu. Whether you are looking for private and secluded, or a hive activity one of Kihei's eight beach parks is bound to offer exactly what you are looking for. Windsurfers and surfers alike will be particularly interested in checking out MaiPoina Oe Lau which is home to the renowned "south swell." Snorkel and scuba gear, kayak rentals, and ocean tours are readily available.

With regard to shopping, do not expect anything on the same scale as Kahului. Kihei as a handful of very small shopping centres and only a very basic industrial complex, the rest of the settlement is full of markets that appear and disappear at random. Four movie houses do however occupy the area, providing entertainment and a sometimes welcomed break from island life for people close by.

People staying near Kihei are also treated to the sight of crescent shaped Molokini which is only a short boat ride away. This declared Marine Life Conservation District is a favourite snorkeling, diving and marine watching spot. Excursions to Molokini leave daily from the harbour. Wildlife enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Kealia Pond is also close by - this saltwater marsh is a haven for the endangered Hawaiian Stilt and Coot.
