Maui's Hana - Botanical Gardens and Fagan's Cross

Maui's Hana is a green paradise that is somewhat secluded from the rest of the island. Out of all the places on Maui, Hana is by far the least developed and therefore remains a testament to the island's natural beauty and charm. Whether it is watching the sunset from the sea cliffs, bathing in isolated pools framed by cool rainforest, hiking through fields of bamboo or walking along beaches with sands of red and black - Hana has a lot to offer!

Standing looking over the settlement is the much visited Fagan's Cross, which is a memorial to Paul Fagan who put his all into keeping the town alive. This 30 foot white cross offers the best view of Hana town and the 3 mile hike to get to it is well worth it just for that.

Looking out from the memorial you can also take in Hana's beaches - Hamoa Beach, Koki Beach, Kaihalulu Beach and the Waianapanapa State Park Beach. Kaihalulu Beach is particularly note worthy, otherwise known as " Red Sand Beach " this piece of shoreline has red sand!

This area also houses part of the Haleakala National Park that houses the Seven Sacred Pools, or as they are know locally, Oheo Gulch. If you continue past the pools, visitors will find themselves face to face with the grave of Charles A. Lindbergh's - the fist man to fly across the Atlantic. Visitors to the park can find restrooms, park information and exhibits at the Kipahulu Ranger Station. The Rangers that man the station offer a choice of hikes and walks throughout the year.

The area also boasts two sets of botanical gardens. "The Kahanu National Tropical Botanical Garden" rests amongst black lava fields and extends over an impressive 122 acres. The garden itself focuses on flora that has meaning to the Polynesian, Micronesian, and Melanesian people. The second one is the "Hana Maui Botanical Gardens. "

This costal village on Maui also has a cultural dimension to it as it is home to the "Hana Cultural Center & Museum" which has been carefully and tenderly conserving and caring for what remnants of the past they can.
