Maui's Bed and Breakfasts (B and B)

Maui's bed and breakfasts are another choice when it comes to finding a place to stay. Generally speaking the majority of the islands bed and breakfasts are quite a bit cheaper than the price of the average hotel and resort. They are the best of both worlds - the homey and intimate atmosphere of a vacation rental combined with some of the services offered by hotels such as prepared meals.

There are a number of B and Bs, some are quirky, some are orientated towards maintaining privacy and other are extremely laid back - the important thing is to choose the one that best matches your mental picture. By in large though a bed and breakfast is a lot more personal which makes them great places to meet other people and this can add to what you take away from your vacation.

The owners themselves should be familiar with Maui and, therefore in effect, you have your own personal guide and concierge at your fingertips - how about that! Generally many people feel that the warmth exuded by a B&B far exceeds the inconvenience of having set meal times and having to share living rooms.

We have picked out a few of Maui's more popular bed and breakfasts:

Old Wailuku Inn is found in Central Maui and is an award winning AAA approved bed and breakfast. The building itself has a historical feel to it and its hardwood floors bring a warmth to the rooms. Full breakfasts are served at 8am and your key gives you 24hour direct access t your room, meaning you have the flexibility to come and go as you please. Telephone: 808-244-5897

Two Mermaids on the Sunnyside of Maui is located in South Maui and is only a short walk from the beach. The rooms are comfortable and are capably decorated with tasteful artwork of the island dotted over the premises. The owners have a flare for Snuba Diving, and would be glad to share their local knowledge. Prices are fairly middle of the range. Telephone: 808-985-7488 .

Heavenly Hana Inn is sited near Hana has a definitive Japanese flavor incorporated into its architectural design. The two acres of land of this Maui bed and breakfast mirrors the Japanese design of the Inn itself, and is dusted with tiny bridges and winding brooks. Relaxing settings and a quality breakfast make this one of the island's slightly pricier B&Bs. Telephone: 808-248-8442

Nona Lani Cottages provide a pleasurable place to stay in Kihei. This little B&B is composed of eight cottages that are spread over rolling green lawns and are only separated by majestic palms and flowering tropical trees. The beach is mere meters away and prices are very reasonable. Telephone: 808-879-2497

What a Wonderful World B&B is nicely situated next to Kamaole II Beach Park and is only a couple of minutes from the neighboring golf courses of Wailea. The rooms come with kitchenettes, and private entrances allow you the flexibility to come and go as you please. Full breakfasts are served every morning on the view enriched veranda. Prices are on par with Nona Lani Cottages. Telephone: 808-879-9103

Wild Ginger is often a favorite place of honeymooners and can be found resting near the Miliko Gulch, not too far away from Haliimaile. The cottage itself provides stunning views of waterfalls, and bamboo forests and the air is often full with the fragrance of the ginger and banana trees native to the area. Very roomy, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Telephone: 808-985-7488

Guest House is a one of Lahaina's better bed and breakfasts. The floor to ceiling windows opens it up to staggering views and the humble parquet flooring brings a sense of charm to this little place. Outside guest will find a large swimming pool and the rooms themselves have their own individual verandahs and there are even hot tubs on site! Telephone: 808-661-8085.

Kili's Cottage is one of Maui's bed and breakfasts located around Kula in the island's Upcountry area. The cottage has three bedrooms and its veranda opens up onto two acres of garden landscape. This is ideal for those family vacations and comes with full kitchen, laundry and gad BBQ. Telephone: 808-985-7488
