Hotels in the capital are aimed mainly at the package tourist so most offer half or full board, and some give discounts for stays of over a week. Although there's not a great number in Valletta, hotels cover the price range and many offer flexible deals.
Le Meridian Phoenicia (http://www.lemeridien.com) is Valletta's only five-star hotel so if you want a splurge, this is the place to do it. The Meridian is unfortunately located outside the city walls and a little too close to the busy bus terminal. The building itself however, retains its classical character and its carefully manicured gardens and heated outdoor pool reflect its upper class clientele. Inside, the décor is stunning and rooms attractive and spacious, all of which comes at a hefty price.
Mid-range but rather tired-looking is The Castille Hotel (http://www.hotelcastillemalta.com/). Housed in an atmospheric 16th century palazzo, this three-star hotel unfortunately fails to receive much inspiration from its environment. Nevertheless, tourists are ever ready to pay little for a sagging mattress and unpleasant bathroom, so you must book in advance. Its cellar and rooftop restaurants are the only thing The Castille really has going for it. The Osborne Hotel is however a welcome find to those seeking mid-range accommodation. Its communal spaces such as the lounge and rooftop deck are spacious and light, space no doubt taken from the rooms themselves, which are unfortunately small, dark and worn.
Grand Harbour Hotel (http://www.grandharbourhotel.com/) is dull, cramped and characterless but nonetheless a good cheap option if you merely want a base from which to explore the city. Similarly inexpensive and friendly, although fairly bland, is The British Hotel. Some rooms do have great views over the Three Cities and the Grand Harbour and it's worth paying a little extra for this. Both are a good place to stay if you want to meet experienced European travellers. Valletta has a number of guesthouses that offer cheap, simple accommodation. The Coronation Guesthouse has great views over the bay and even has a kitchen for guest use. Asti Guesthouse offers provides great value accommodation in pleasant and often grand surroundings; breakfast is served under a massive chandelier.
