The approach to the four star Mellieha Bay Hotel is nothing to get excited about. The ribbon of white 1960s, four and six storey blocks sprawled along the sea front is less than spectacular. However, once inside, the hotel lives up to its star rating. Almost touching the seafront in Mellieha Bay, it's far better seen from the inside out, as the views over the bay are spectacular.
All the rooms have a balcony, those that don't overlook the bay, face the equally picturesque nearby town of Mellieha. If you don't want to fight for a space on the public beach, you can enjoy the water and the sunshine at the hotel's own private beach or in one of the hotels two terraced outdoor pools. There is also an indoor pool for those tourists visiting during winter. The hotel runs its own activities during the day as well as providing musical entertainment in the evenings. The picturesque location, extensive and well-manicured gardens, and the great views across the bay give the hotel an idyllic, romantic feel. This explains not only the large number of returning guests but also the quantity of couples that choose to marry in the hotel grounds.
The main drawback with the Mellieha Bay Hotel is its relative isolation from shops and the rest of the island. The hotel is aware of this and runs a bus service to the town on Mellieha and to Valletta, but a hire car would be a good idea nonetheless.
Seeing as the majority of Malta's coastline doesn't have enough grains to build a sandcastle with, it's the 750 meters of sandy beach that's Mellieha Bay's main attraction. Officially known as Ghadira Beach, this is a place that draws families and sun lovers alike. The strip is lined with bars and discos to enjoy when the sun goes down and until then there's plenty of sand to stretch out on and water sports to enjoy. The main attraction of Mellieha Bay to families is the sand bank that stretches 100m out to sea, giving lots of safe, shallow water to play in. Consequently, it's not that great for serious swimming.
