Ferries to Malta - Ferry Services to Valletta, Gozo & Comino

Malta may be well connected by air to the rest of Europe and North Africa but flights fail to capture the magic summoned when seeing this captivating archipelago emerge from the haze of sun and sea. With most major ports in the southern Mediterranean running services to Malta, ferry travel is easy to organise. Within the archipelago itself boat services are also well utilised with ferries running frequently between and around the islands.

Grimaldi (+39-010-582080) and Vitru (www.virtuferries.com) ferry companies are the major operators, all of which run services from Italian and Sicilian ports to Valletta. High-speed catamarans take only 90 minutes from Pozzallo in Sicily, making it popular with day-trippers. A sea tax and government levy are payable by anyone leaving the country by boat. There is now an additional service running between Malta, north of Italy, and Sicily operated by Grandi Navi Veloci, running a weekly service between Malta, Livorno & Palermo - see their agents at http://www.gollcher.com/

Travel between the Maltese islands is dominated by The Gozo Channel Company. They offer two travel routes to and from Mgarr on Gozo, the most popular of which is to Cirkewwa, on Malta's most northern point. The ferries to Cirkewwa take only 20 minutes to cross the four mile stretch and in the summer, depart every 30 minutes throughout most of the day and night. Even during the quieter winter months, this service runs until around 2am. Foot and car passengers dominate this route, although some commercial vehicles may also be carried. The other destination is Sa Maison near Valletta, which is orientated towards cargo shipments although foot and car passengers will also be carried. This has a journey time of 75 minutes and departs less frequently. During the peak summer months, a hovermarine passenger-only service also operates between Sa Maison and Valletta.

The one hotel on the small island of Comino runs a ferry service between Mgarr and Cirkewwa and San Niklaw Bay on Comino. Although hotel guests are given priority on the boat, there's plenty of room for day-trippers wanting to swim and snorkel in the Blue Lagoon, Malta's most stunning natural attraction. Other independent boat companies offer a shuttle service to the island from the main tourist areas on Malta like Sliema and Buggiba, and Xlandi on Gozo.

A shuttle ferry service operates between Malta's capital and the seaside suburb of Sliema, one of Malta's most desirable residences and impressive promenades. This fast, convenient service takes only 5 minutes to cross the harbour and runs throughout daylight hours.
