Hotels and farmhouses between them cover a wide price range, offer varying amounts of facilities and encompass different degrees of the Gozitan atmosphere.
Gozo has some of the best hotels on the archipelago. Some critics have gone so far as to claim that Ta' Cenc, a luxury hotel near Sannat in the south of the island, is one of the best hotels in southern Europe. Made of the local golden stone, a single storey drystone wall encloses a small 'village' of apartments and rooms, the most sought after of which are the 'trullos', cosy, romantic and completely round. If you're after the same luxury but with more spectacular views, why not try L-lmgarr, an impressive place set high on the hill above Mgarr Harbour. The owners have taken the trouble to add more than a touch of the traditional style and, with views over the island, its terrace restaurant makes a great place for a romantic meal. A cheaper option is St Patrick's on the waterfront in Xlendi Bay. This simple, attractive place offers great value for money but the resort of Xlendi is one of the livelier places on the island so avoid this if total peace and quiet is what you're after.
Gozo's farmhouses are rapidly becoming the more popular accommodation option on the island. Many of the buildings are over 300 years old and retain many of their original features such as wooden beams and stone arches. The automatic atmosphere this creates has proved a winner with tourists and many visitors choose a farmhouse over Gozo hotels. Varying in size and facilities, the farmhouse you choose can be really suited to your needs; the location for a whole family get-together, or simply a quiet rural retreat.
If it's a feeling of exclusivity you're after, then one of Gozo's five star hotels will give you what you want; others prefer the rustic charm and atmosphere of the converted farmhouse. Many visitors to the island come just for the day however, so although the range is available, the quantity is limited and advanced booking essential, especially during the high season.
