As the island only has 10 hotels, the range of choice is limited and many of the hotels fail to provide anything beyond what is standard. Those looking for something a little more inspiring should look to the farmhouses in Gozo, which are often characterful and atmospheric.
Around the island dozens of sturdy, stone-built farm buildings have been converted into visitor accommodation. As some of the buildings are as much as 400 years old, many retained the original wooden beams and stone arches of their original construction, giving the buildings a real rustic charm. The rural setting of the farmhouses is invariably peaceful, with most located inland in quaint, picturesque villages such as Xaghra and Gharb.
The buildings may date back many centuries but the farmhouses have been expertly converted and fitted out with modern facilities plentiful enough for the 21 st century traveller. All additions are subtly and tastefully done, and it seems every effort has been made to preserve the charm and character of the farmhouses. Most farmhouses in Gozo come complete with everything needed for an easy holiday including a swimming pool, fully fitted kitchen, laundry, barbeque and TV. Most of the farmhouses are of a decent size, sleeping anything up to 16 people. The accommodation is rented as a whole so consequently, the greater the number of beds filled, the cheaper it will be per person. The winter low season can be up to ten times cheaper than the summer so if you can travel out of season, you'll save yourself a substantial amount of money. Rental is usually done on a weekly basis although arrival days are flexible, and visitors who book for loner may be offered a discount. Most farmhouses provide you with an introductory food pack containing all the basics so you can have a cup of tea on your arrival.
Whether you use the farmhouse as the location for a family get-together, or simply want to get away from it all, you can guarantee that staying in an original farmhouse will be a truly memorable experience.
